First Nations Disability Program

The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) recognizes the need to support First Nation citizens living with a disability on and off reserve. The SCO First Nations Disability Program can help increase access to programs, services and supports, and create awareness and education on disability needs.

Who does the First Nation Disabilities Navigator help?

  • First Nation citizens who live with a physical, cognitive, developmental, sensory, mental health, or behavioral disability.
  • Caregivers of persons living with a disability.
  • Any professional (E.g. clinicians, community organizations) who needs to address supports for a First Nation person with a disability.

Our program aims to:

  • Support individuals and caregivers with navigating disability supports in health, education, housing, justice, social systems, etc.
  • Encourage those with unmet disability needs to secure access to supportive programming, assessments, and resources.
  • Assist with the application process to access federal or provincial disability services or benefits listed below under “Resources”.
  • Assist with advocacy and attend meetings or appointments on request.
  • Offer monthly workshops and information sessions designed for First Nation citizens living with a disability and their famillies or caregivers.
  • Establish partnerships and network with community programs to ensure the needs of First Nation citizens are addressed.
