“The love of Morgan’s daughters brought her home.”
-Grand Chief Jerry Daniels
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 7, 2025
ANISHINAABE AND DAKOTA TERRITORY, MB — The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) is extending condolences to the family of the late Morgan Beatrice Harris.
A member of the Long Plain First Nation, Morgan was only 39 years old when her life was violently ended by a serial killer.
Grand Chief Jerry Daniels states:
“The love that Cambria, Elle, and Kera have for Morgan, and the love that her family has for her is evident. It is their persistence, unwavering strength and bravery that brought their mother home.
On behalf of the southern Anishinaabe and Dakota Nations, I extend sincere condolences and prayers for healing for all who are grieving the loss of Morgan Beatrice Harris. SCO expresses solidarity and care for those who are impacted by this loss.
Morgan Harris was taken from us too soon. She clearly was so very loved by her family. The details of how she was taken, and by who, are difficult to accept.
Morgan deserved so much more. Her story is a stark reminder of the urgent need for action, at all levels, on the national emergency of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, two spirit, and gender-diverse people.
In December 2022, I stood with two of Morgan’s daughters on Parliament Hill as they bravely addressed media to demand a search for their mother. The advocacy of Morgan’s family was necessary for her to be located. Her family faced significant barriers.
SCO acknowledges Premier Wab Kinew and his government for supporting the family in their need to bring their mother home. Your leadership is a powerful demonstration of the love, care, and respect that Morgan Harris always should have received from government.
As we reflect on this news, and continue to mourn the loss of Morgan, it is essential that we listen to the wisdom shared by her daughter Elle to do better. First Nations women deserve so much better.
As the news of the recovery of Morgan Harris is reported, I encourage members of the media to remember that Morgan was a sacred person. Please honour her family and reflect the sacred teaching of respect in your reporting.
To the daughters of Cambria, your mother would be so proud of the strong warriors you have become. SCO extends prayers and we lift you up.”
