McLean Legacy Fund for Day School Survivors Now Open

July 11, 2025

The Southern Chiefs’ Organization proudly honours the legacy of the late Garry McLean—a tireless advocate for justice for Survivors of Indian day schools.

A member of Lake Manitoba First Nation, Garry was the lead plaintiff in the class action lawsuit against the Government of Canada.

The lawsuit resulted in a $1.47 billion settlement and the creation of the McLean Legacy Fund.

Federal Indian day schools were created to assimilate Indigenous children and to eliminate our cultures.

Garry knew this firsthand as a Survivor—his experience helped him with his advocacy efforts.

Grand Chief Jerry Daniels states:

Garry McLean was a powerful voice for justice and a relentless advocate for Survivors of Indian day schools. His leadership and determination helped bring national attention to a long-ignored issue, and his efforts led to real change for thousands of our people. I had the honour of working alongside Garry, and I witnessed his deep commitment to our communities. The launch of the McLean Legacy Fund is a fitting tribute to his life’s work. His legacy will continue to uplift Survivors and their families for generations to come.

Thanks to his efforts, First Nations citizens now have access to the McLean Legacy Fund—a $200 million initiative that supports healing and cultural revitalization.

The fund will provide up to $25,000 for Nations to establish their own Survivor Committees.

Additional funding, between $100,000 and $250,000 (1 time and/or per year) is available under Healing & Wellness, Language & Culture, Commemoration and Truth Telling.
