HONOURING ELDER CHARLES NELSON

November 28, 2022

The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) shares condolences with all those who loved Elder Charles Weston Nelson.

Charlie was an Elder involved with SCO’s Child and Family Services Program and gifted our process of developing First Nation family laws with the name “Waakaabit,” which means working within the circle to make good decisions for our children, families, and communities.

Elder Nelson supported SCO on so many fronts and programs. He was on our Health Transformation Governance Committee and our Elders and Knowledge Keepers Circle.

Charlie Nelson was also part of the Elders Council for the Southern Network of Care. He was a very well-respected and loved Anishinaabe Elder and community leader with ties to many different Nations stretching from Manitoba to across Turtle Island.

Charlie was raised in the Anishinaabe community of Bagwaa’onishkoziibing (Roseau River First Nation).

Elder Nelson has given voice through ceremony for SCO programs and building our relationships. Chi miigwetch Charlie for all that you contributed. You will be forever loved and missed. SCO sends prayers for all those who are mourning the loss of this beloved Elder.
