The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) is proud to announce its project to transform the iconic Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) heritage building in downtown Winnipeg. Working closely with HBC and our federal, provincial, and municipal Treaty partners, SCO has developed a visionary plan that will turn the building into a space for economic and social reconciliation.
The multi-million dollar project will create social and economic opportunity, revitalizing the HBC building while preserving its important heritage and helping to revive Winnipeg’s downtown core.

The "Finding Our Spirits Gathering" for Sixties Scoop Survivors was a memorable and healing experience!
The Anish Corporation and the Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) hosted this event earlier this week.
SCO is beyond proud to have received feedback from the Survivors about how safe, supported, and welcome they were made to feel at the gathering.
Here is a glimpse into the two-day event on Treaty One Territory. Stay tuned to SCO’s Facebook page for a photo album from the special blanketing ceremony held for Survivors.

Grand Chief Jerry Daniels of the Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) took part in a press conference earlier today to announce legal action against all levels of government on the recurring pollution and degradation of Lake Winnipeg.
Eight First Nations bordering Lake Winnipeg jointly filed a court action asking for the city, province, and federal governments to put an end to the sewage leaks and water contamination impacting Lake Winnipeg.
The lawsuit also emphasizes First Nation Charter and Treaty Rights and the fiduciary obligations owed by the defendants to consult with First Nations.
Chief Gordon Bluesky of the Brokenhead Ojibway Nation shared the following: "Our First Nations stand united in legal action to protect our lands and waters, which are the lifeblood of our communities. Although we had hoped to avoid court, it’s crucial to recognize the profound importance of water to our people—it sustains us, connects us to our ancestors, and is integral to our cultural identity."
Water is life. It is essential to good health, and we take our role in protecting water very seriously.
SCO stands with our Nations as they assert their rights to protect our precious water.
National Nursing Week takes place from May 6 to 12, 2024.
The week is an opportunity for the Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) to recognize and acknowledge nurses in Manitoba, who have chosen to care for others through their profession.
Monday, May 6 is a special day to recognize Indigenous nurses.
SCO invites you to celebrate Anishinaabe and Dakota nurses by sharing their photo, name, the location/First Nation where they work, and a bit of information about why you would like to recognize them. If there are nurses who are working in your Nation who may not be Anishinaabe and/or Dakota, please feel free to recognize them as well!
If you have a nurse you would like to recognize, please email us: media@scoinc.mb.ca
You can also leave the details in the comments.
We will post all photos and names of nurses we receive on May 6, Indigenous Nurses Day.
That’s how Peguis First Nation Chief Dr. Stan Bird describes the ongoing impacts that the floods of 2022 continue to have on his Nation.
The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) fully stands with Chief Dr. Bird and his Nation as they have taken the step of declaring a state of emergency.
This declaration must serve as a wake-up call to the Nation’s Treaty partners as they fail to provide Peguis with replacement housing as well as permanent flood infrastructure.
Hundreds of homes have been condemned and close to 800 Peguis citizens are still displaced from the flood.
This is a travesty and needs to be addressed immediately. This crisis is taking an immeasurable toll on the people of Peguis.
SCO supports the leadership of Peguis Frist Nation as they seek to bring everyone back home!
You are invited to join us as the Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) celebrates 25 years of advocacy and service.
