MANAGER OF COMMUNICATIONS

 

 


The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) requires a Manager of Communications for an ongoing position based on annual funding.

Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) serves the 34 Anishinaabe and Dakota First Nations of southern Manitoba. SCO was established 21 years ago by the Chiefs as an independent political organization to protect, preserve, promote, and enhance First Nations peoples’ inherent rights, languages, customs, and traditions through the application and implementation of the spirit and intent of the Treaty-making process.

SCO is looking for a creative, results-oriented professional to be its next Manager of Communications. The successful candidate will be an innovative thinker with a strong work ethic who thrives in a complex environment and can work collaboratively to move ideas into action. SCO is looking for an exceptional team player and people person to join our growing team!

EDUCATION:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in journalism, communications, or a related discipline
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in communications with demonstrated experience leading effective communications programs
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of digital marketing best practices for social media, including search engine optimization, analysis, and basic website management
  • Demonstrated proficiency in desktop publishing, document layout, and basic graphic design and layout
  • Ability to take high-quality photographs and develop and produce videos and podcasts an asset
  • Clearly demonstrated political and business acumen
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and coordinate events
  • Exceptional organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and networks with SCO First Nations, Indigenous organizations and municipal, provincial, federal governments, and other stakeholders
  • Knowledge of and experience in First Nation communities
  • Ability to speak Dakota or Ojibway language an asset
  • Proficiency in the use of computers (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, WordPress, Adobe)

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead communications strategy and plan and implement appropriate tactics
  • Develop and design media content including speaking notes, press releases, backgrounders, fact sheets, brochures, posters, web content, and social media posts
  • Develop and track digital activities to gauge effectiveness
  • Conduct research including daily media audit to analyze qualitative and quantitative information relating to issues, communications, and engagement strategies
  • Organize and manage press conferences and events
  • Coordinate media requests in an efficient and timely manner
  • Develop and maintain stakeholder and media lists, communications calendar, and photo library
  • Ensure key stakeholders are regularly informed and engaged with SCO
  • Serve as the media liaison on behalf of SCO
  • Travel will be required
