This morning Grand Chief Jerry Daniels, Lake Manitoba First Nation Chief Cornell Mclean Sr, Dakota Tipi First Nation Chief Eric Pashe, Roseau River Anishinabe First Councillor Terrance Nelson, and SCO staff met with Federal Cabinet Minister of Indigenous Services and MP to Ville-Marie-Le Sud-Ouest-Ile-des-Soeurs, The Honourable Marc Miller. SCO brought forward some of the concerns of our southern First Nations, such as emergency management, infrastructure, health transformation, and Child and Family Services.
SCO gifted Minister Miller two copper mugs and a sweater from the SCO’s Youth Council before Grand Chief Daniels shared one last message to Minister Miller: “We are completely unified in the south.”
Miigwetch for the productive meeting. SCO looks forward to further developing our partnerships to represent the needs of our southern First Nations and the Anishinaabe and Dakota peoples.
Congratulations Chief Viola Eastman for your re-election in Canupawakpa Dakota First Nation and to councillors Gerald Sandy and Stewart Brown for your election victories! SCO looks forward to continuing our work with Canupawakpa's Chief and Council through another term of Chief Viola Eastman's leadership!
Grand Chief Jerry Daniels and Gambler First Nation Chief David LeDoux had valuable discussions today with Minister of Economic Development and Training and Lakeside MLA Ralph Eichler and Minister of Indigenous and Northern Relations, Agassiz MLA Eileen Clarke. SCO came to highlight a few economic development priorities of southern First Nations, such as SCO’s role in job creation and training for Indigenous peoples, mining, potash, tobacco taxation, and to hear about some of the provincial plans around these areas.
Grand Chief Jerry Daniels met with Grand Council Treaty #3 Ogichidaa Francis Kavanaugh at Animikii Ozoson Child & Family Services Inc to learn about child and family services of inter-jurisdictional partners that impact families within Treaty #3 nations. The aim of meetings like this is to identify areas of alignment and processes that can support the well-being of children, families, and communities, and to explore what the implementation of Abinooji Inakonigiwin child care law in Anishinaabe Nations of Treaty #3 could look like.
Miigwetch Dakota Tipi First Nation Chief Eric Pashe for the kind words and for hosting the 2020 SCO Election Summit
