International Human Rights Day

December 10, 2020

EVERYONE deserves to live a life without violence!

This International Human Rights Day, we are highlighting the very real need for more domestic & family violence shelters in First Nation communities!

Shelters are life-saving and often life-changing. At Ikwe Widdjiitiwin, Inc, they do their best to help women & children from any community find the services they need. Using a culturally appropriate framework, Ikwe offers housing support and have five transitional housing units where families can stay up to a year.

They offer follow-up services and outreach to families who have transitioned back into the community and to ALL women fleeing domestic and family violence.

Everyone who needs access to these types of services should have access. There are over 630 First Nation communities in Canada, yet only 46 federally funded domestic violence shelters in these communities! EVERY single First Nation that wants a shelter should have one.

Miigwetch, Wopida, to Ikwe Widdjiitiwin, Inc for helping to fill this critical service gap!

Anyone in need of Ikwe’s services may call their Crisis line at 1-800-362-3344 or visit http://www.ikwe.ca for more information.
