BACKGROUND:

SCO is a growing and dynamic regional First Nation organization that represents 32 Anishinaabe and Dakota Nations and more than 87,000 citizens in what is now southern Manitoba. Established in 1999 by the Chiefs, SCO is mandated as an independent organization to protect, preserve, promote, and enhance First Nation peoples’ inherent rights, languages, customs, and traditions through the application and implementation of the spirit and intent of the Treaty-making process.

OVERVIEW:

The Southern Chiefs’ Organization will be hiring motivated youth between the ages of 15 and 30 to work in our Winnipeg sub-offices.  Summer Interns will work in a variety of departments which may include the Jordan’s Principle Program, the Status Card Program, the Residential School Project, and the Communications Department, among other program areas. The full-time positions are six (6) to sixteen (16) weeks in length, beginning approximately May and ending in August of 2025.

Program Overviews

Jordan’s Principle Program

Our Jordan’s Principle Coordinators assist First Nation children and youth (up to 18 years of age) and their families to access programs, services, and supports to improve health, education, and social outcomes. They are located at the Specialized Services for Children and Youth (SSCY) Centre, the Children’s Hospital, and in many southern school divisions.

Status Card Program

Our Status Card Program assists citizens in applying for renewals, replacements, and first-time Secure Certificate of Indian Status Cards. Our trained staff can assist in the application process, assist with filling out forms, take your picture, and submit completed applications to Indigenous Services Canada – all at no charge.

Residential School Project

Our Residential School Project is dedicated to supporting Survivors and their descendants in accessing information about their experiences in residential and day schools. This includes assisting in locating, applying for, and understanding relevant records. The program focuses on government and private records. It also involves records from faith-based communities, municipal authorities, and funeral homes.

Communications

Our Communications team ensures the perspectives of SCO and its’ member Nations are communicated to First Nation citizens, stakeholders, funders and the broader community. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Summer Interns will have responsibilities specific to their area of placement.  These may include, but are not limited to, assisting in hosting SCO events, supporting coordinators meeting with youth, developing social media content, distributing information, conducting research, providing support to department managers, completing monthly progress reports, and other standard administrative duties.
  • Provides administrative and organizational program support.
  • Responding to public enquiries in a timely manner and provides general program information.
  • Provides general office duties and general supports to program staff.
  • Assists in processing mail, emails and general office supply inventory.
  • Assist in compiling data for weekly, monthly and quarterly reporting purposes.
  • Maintain manual and computerized confidential filing systems.
  • Adhere to privacy legislation and policies for storing personal information.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • For the purposes of fulfilling funding requirements, applicants should be between 15 and 30 years of age.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and respect for First Nations cultural practices, traditions, and customs.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Attentive to detail and have an organized approach.
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to think critically and apply discretion when dealing with confidential or sensitive information.
  • Ability to work independently as well as able to contribute to the success of a team.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams, and standard office equipment such as printer/fax machine/scanner.
  • Some positions will require travel to urban and SCO communities.

Preferred

  • Previous work experience in an office setting is considered an asset.
  • If eligible to drive, a valid class 5 MB driver’s license with access to a reliable vehicle for business travel
  • Ability to speak/understand the Anishinaabe or Dakota languages.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • A current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check for those over the age of eighteen
