The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) Mobile Crisis Response Team (MCRT) requires six Team Members to facilitate and optimize efforts in providing mental health supports to the 34 southern First Nations. The Team will consist of six Crisis Team Members and two Intake Workers to assist with crises and support mental health and wellness in southern First Nation communities.


SCO is a growing and dynamic regional Indigenous organization that represents 34 Anishinaabe and Dakota Nations and more than 80,500 citizens in southern Manitoba. SCO was established 22 years ago by the Chiefs as an independent organization to protect, preserve, promote, and enhance First Nation peoples’ inherent rights, languages, customs, and traditions through the application and implementation of the spirit and intent of the Treaty-making process.

The MCRT Team Members are key members of the SCO MCRT who work with purpose to support southern First Nation citizens and communities. The MCRT will be trauma-informed and benefit from southern Knowledge Keepers and Elders and culturally appropriate mental health and wellness service providers. The Mobile Crisis Response Team’s primary focus will be crisis intervention, and members will also act as mental health and addiction navigators. As qualified professionals, they will be trained for rapid response but also for case coordination services to ensure that clients have a care plan and can act as a vital link to an aftercare and future care plan.

Reporting to the SCO MCRT Team Lead, the MCRT Team Members are licenced health care professionals from a regulated body who facilitate response efforts for the MCRT and help to support mobile crisis intervention and ongoing treatment in mental health and wellness. The SCO Mobile Crisis Response Team Members will be responsible for:

  • Crisis intervention, triage services and increased capacity for emergency responses to crises
  • Frontline mental health support services to 34 Southern First Nations communities and Tribal Councils
  • Provide community-specific trauma-informed mental health supports to community crisis events
  • Relaying all necessary information to MCRT Coordinator
  • Crisis management and rapid response and recovery services throughout a crisis to address complex and evolving challenges
  • Mental Health First Aid screening and assessment to match individuals in crisis to the appropriate level of treatment and support
  • Critical incident stress debriefing
  • Post-suicide response/aftercare
  • Safe talk and sharing circles
  • Short term one-on-one counselling
  • Drug and alcohol addiction support and triaging using a harm reduction approach
  • Grief and loss support
  • Domestic and family violence support and triaging
  • Referrals to traditional and clinical support services
  • Alternative services including traditional ceremonies and land-based teachings
  • Prevention training
  • Individual client assessments such as suicide assessment and safety plan, self-esteem and depression scale and mental health status
  • Other duties as assigned


  • A degree in a mental health related field and regulated profession such as counselling, social work, therapy, psychology, or psychiatric nursing
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience providing crisis mental health services
  • Experience working with southern First Nations and Tribal Councils and their health teams
  • Good knowledge of Federal, Provincial and First Nation health care systems including First Nation and Inuit Health Branch, Nursing Stations, and Telehealth technology
  • Team player with a “families first” approach who can work collaboratively with a variety of people within complex systems
  • Exceptional organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work productively with families, colleagues, supervisors, and other internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to work under pressure and to independently manage a wide range of tasks, often within short timelines and with precision
  • Knowledge of Personal Health Information Act and ability to maintain confidentiality when developing and handling sensitive information
  • Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to write clear, concise documents and reports with a high degree of accuracy and for a variety of audiences
  • Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate to a variety of audiences
  • Ability to speak Anishinaabe or Dakota languages an asset
  • Proficiency in the use of computers (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
