BACKGROUND:
SCO is a growing and dynamic regional Indigenous organization that represents 34 Anishinaabe and Dakota Nations and more than 87,000 citizens in southern Manitoba. SCO was established 25 years ago by the Chiefs as an independent organization to protect, preserve, promote, and enhance First Nation peoples’ inherent rights, languages, customs, and traditions through the application and implementation of the spirit and intent of the Treaty-making process.
Jordan’s Principle is named in memory of Jordan River Anderson, a child from Norway House Cree Nation. Jordan’s Principle is a child first initiative intended to ensure that First Nation children receive public services ordinarily available to other children. The goal of SCO’s Jordan’s Principle Program is to connect First Nation children and their families with quality services, support, and resources to achieve holistic outcomes.

OVERVIEW:
Reporting to the Jordan’s Principle Manager, the Jordan’s Principle Coordinator is a valuable member of the SCO team and works with families, health facilities and program staff to increase access for First Nation children requiring health-related supports. The successful candidate has knowledge of and a genuine interest in helping children and families within the health system.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Utilizing a strength-based approach and focusing on solutions, the SCO Jordan’s Principle Coordinator will support First Nation children and youth by:
- Working with children, youth, families, health professionals, and others to identify the resources needed to address gaps and ensure positive health outcomes.
- Assisting with the application process to access federal Jordan’s Principle resources and services for children who require health or medical supports.
- Preparing and submitting Jordan’s Principle applications and payment requisitions in-house to prevent delays and/or providing timely referrals to appropriate agencies if required.
- Providing navigation support to appropriate programs, departments and/or agencies and working with professionals in a responsive and coordinated manner.
- Attending meetings, appointments or case conferencing with families as required.
- Collaborating with external service providers and programs such as:
- Winnipeg Children’s Hospital
- HSC Women’s Hospital/St. Boniface Hospital
- CancerCare Manitoba
- Ronald McDonald House
- Pharmacies and medical supply vendors
- Jordan’s Principle programs located across Manitoba
- Indigenous Services Canada/First Nations and Inuit Health Branch
- Various provincial programs
- Others
- Maintaining confidentiality in accordance with Personal Health Information Act (PHIA) standards and privacy legislation to ensure personal information is kept private, safe, and secure.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBLITIES:
- Provides Jordan’s Principle supports and services for First Nations children referred by health/medical facilities or other agencies, or via self-referrals by parent and caregivers.
- Provides consistent, comprehensive, competent, and culturally appropriate services.
- Coordinates and shares Jordan’s Principle information, encourages children with unmet needs and their families to secure access to services and supports, assists with applications to Jordan’s Principle, and fulfils requests/referrals as required.
- Builds and nurtures relationships across community-based programs, with service providers, First Nations, and federal, provincial and territorial programs and services.
- Ensures children and families receive high quality culturally appropriate services and supports across all stages and levels of care.
- Collects client data for recordkeeping and reporting purposes and adheres to documentation standards.
- Adheres to SCO and partner sites’ policies, procedures, and standards. Provides services in compliance with all laws and privacy legislation including but not limited to The Personal Health Information Act (Manitoba).
- Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience working in the health sector.
- Degree, diploma or certificate in related fields such as health or social sciences is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Knowledge of history and implementation of Jordan’s Principle.
- Experience working with multi-sectoral partnerships.
- Team player with a “families first” approach who can work collaboratively with a variety of people within complex systems.
- Knowledge of the impacts of colonialism, residential and day schools, intergenerational trauma and systemic racism on First Nation education and children.
- Exceptional organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work productively with families, team members, supervisors, and other internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to work under pressure and to independently and manage a wide range of tasks, often within short timelines and with precision.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality when developing and handling sensitive information.
- Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to write clear, concise documents and reports with a high degree of accuracy and for a variety of audiences.
- Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate to a variety of audiences.
- Proficiency in the use of computers (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook).
- Ability to speak Anishinaabe or Dakota languages an asset.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Satisfactory Criminal Record check
- Clear Children and Adult Abuse Registry Check
- Clear Vulnerable Persons Registry check
- Must have a valid Manitoba Driver’s License and reliable vehicle as frequent travel will be required
- Physical requirements may include lifting and carrying items up to 40 pounds / 18 kilograms
- If the candidate is a member of a registered profession, candidate must be a member in good standing of their regulatory body
