A Bold Vision for a New Future
The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) is proud to announce its project to transform the iconic Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) heritage building in downtown Winnipeg. Working closely with HBC and our federal, provincial, and municipal Treaty partners, SCO has developed a visionary plan that will turn the building into a space for economic and social reconciliation.
The multi-million dollar project will create social and economic opportunity, revitalizing the HBC building while preserving its important heritage and helping to revive Winnipeg’s downtown core.

Manidoo Miiniigooizowin, A Gift from Creator
SCO invites you to visit our “Manidoo Miiniigooizowin, A Gift from the Creator” exhibition at the Manitoba Museum.
The exhibition celebrates the beauty and resilience of the Anishinaabe and Dakota peoples, and commemorates SCO’s 25th anniversary. Featuring objects from the 34 Nations represented by SCO, “Manidoo Miiniigooizowin, A Gift from the Creator” is a celebration of the past, present, and future.
The museum provides free entry for First Nation, Inuit, and Métis people.

Jerry Daniels is Grand Chief of the Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO), representing 34 Anishnaabe and Dakota communities in southern Manitoba. In January of 2020, he was acclaimed for a second term, the first time a Grand Chief has run unopposed in SCO’s history.

TAKING SHAPE
The people who call the Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation home will soon have access to a new centre for healing.
Construction crews are working hard to complete a brand new healing lodge, located in front of the Isaac Beaulieu Memorial School.
Healing lodges play a significant role in many of our Nations. They provide a safe place for people to deal with the impacts of various traumas, grief, and other mental health concerns.
The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) would like to pay tribute to Chief Trevor Prince, Council members, and all who played a role in making this vital new facility come to life.
The hope is now that construction on this beautiful log structure will be complete by this summer.

EVERYONE NEEDS A WARM, LOVING KOOKUM…
Those are the words of Ebb and Flow Knowledge Keeper Phyllis Racette.
Phyllis was recently hired by the Mountain View School Division (MSVD) as resident Knowledge Keeper.
She is now sharing her language and culture at all the division schools.
On this particular visit to Whitmore School in Dauphin, she was teaching the grade one class O’Canada in Anishinaabemowin.
When asked why she accepted this newly-created role, Phyllis is quick to say, “because of the children.”
She also tells us that she can’t walk down a school hallway without getting several hugs from her students.
The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) is justifiably proud of Phyllis, and of all our precious knowledge and language keepers, who are doing what they can to keep our teachings and languages alive.
We also salute the leadership at MVSD for embracing First Nation’s culture, and for doing their part in creating meaningful reconciliation within their classrooms.
