47 YEARS…
… That’s how much time Knowledge Keeper Darlene McKay, of the Rolling River First Nation, has devoted to educating young minds.
Darlene teaches Anishinaabemowin to the children of Erickson Elementary School in the Rolling River School Division.
She also shares Anishinaabe teachings and culture with anyone lucky enough to enter her classroom. Her warmth and smile are infectious. If you spend anytime with her in the school hallways, you will hear students and staff alike happily greeting her, with smiles on their faces as well.
Darlene’s dedication to her culture does not end when the final bell rings.
She is a fixture on the pow wow trail and can also be found leading ceremony and teaching the language in her Nation and beyond.
Darlene credits her parents and grandparents for giving her the gift of Anishinaabemowin. She is particularly grateful to her mother for somehow keeping her out of the residential school system.
The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) is beyond grateful to Darlene and for the priceless lessons that all of our Language and Knowledge Keepers provide to our youngest citizens.
We also want to say a very special miigwetch to Darlene, for dedicating close to half a century of her life to the children of Rolling River and beyond.

MAKE YOUR MARK! SCO SEEKING VISUAL ARTISTS
The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) is seeking a visual artist from an SCO member Nation to honour Survivors and those impacted by residential schools, day schools, the Sixties Scoop, and the national emergency of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, two spirit, and gender-diverse (MMIWG2S+) people.
The artist will be commissioned to create a mural to be displayed as part of SCO’s Wehwehneh Bahgahkinahgohn, or ‘it is visible’ project, in the former Hudson’s Bay building in downtown Winnipeg.
The “Remembering Together” mural will serve as a visible commemoration of the impacts of residential schools, day schools, the Sixties Scoop, and MMIWG2S+, while also celebrating resilience in spite of the devastating and ongoing impacts of colonization.
Apply for this opportunity by April 29, 2024.

HONOURING AN EDUCATOR
She’s known as the “go to person” when it comes to planning anything big at the Chan Kagha Otina Dakota Wayawa Tipi School in the Birdtail Sioux Dakota First Nation.
Janelle Koroscil has been teaching at the school for 17 years. She is the school’s longest-serving staff member!
On this particular visit, when she wasn’t engaging with her grade two and three class, she was putting the finishing touches on the school’s upcoming fiddle jam.
That event welcomes students from a number of visiting Nations in the Frontier School Division.
Janelle was also the lead planner for Birdtail’s school pow wow.
These are just two examples of the enthusiasm and energy that she brings to the school and students every day.
Janelle has earned the respect of her colleagues and families in Birdtail.
She has gone above and beyond when it comes to her role as a teacher, and we are pleased to say, she has more than earned the trust of her adopted community.
The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) salutes Janelle, and all the incredible educators in our Nations who are doing their part to create positive academic outcomes and opportunities for our children and youth.
